Are you planning on carrying out a large-scale renovation project in the near future? Without a doubt, you already know it's bound to be a financial burden, and for the majority of us, it can significantly curtail our dreams.

To reinforce your commitment to pursue your plans and bring your project to fruition, the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ) offers three financial assistance programs: the Residential Adaptation Assistance Program (RAAP), Rénovation Québec, and RénoRégion.

Have you already heard of these programs that can give you a helping hand with your home renovations? Well, here is pertinent information about the three should you wish to materialize your upcoming renovation project.

RénoRégion: Financial Aid for Home Renovations in Rural Areas

In terms of RénoRégion, this program was implemented to assist low-income households in rural areas requiring extensive home repairs or renovations. To be eligible, you must reside in either:

  • Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine;

  • in a town with a population below 15,000; or

  • in a town with a population above 15,000, yet lacking a sewer or water supply network connection.

Note that this program was designed for owner-occupants with a primary residence presenting a major defect. Also, to be eligible, one must meet the qualified income limit, which varies from one household to the next.

Other eligibility criteria must be met, such as a maximum of two units as well as a standard $115,000 work grant, per property in question. Keep in mind that for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 period, the program’s budget was valued at over 40 million dollars.

Rénovation Québec: Financial Aid for Municipalities

The Rénovation Québec program was designed to financially assist select municipalities in which residential areas are deemed rundown and requiring significant renovations. Under specific conditions, if the municipality in which you reside is an active participant in this program, the work you plan on carrying out may be admissible to the financial assistant made available for that purpose.

Inquire as to the details and terms that pertain to your situation. Select municipalities may decide to include in their program one or more intervention types, among which are the following:

  • residential renovations for low-income households (major defect repairs);

  • house-related work (includes renovations, construction, recycling, home adaption, home ownership, as well as additional financial assistance from AccèsLogis); and

  • repairs to structurally deteriorating house foundations.

Residential Adaptation Assistance Program (RAAP)

As mentioned on the Government of Québec website, this specific program is destined for individuals suffering from an impairment, meaning "a person with a deficiency causing a significant and persistent disability, who is liable to encounter barriers in performing everyday activities.”

As a result, the work carried out must permit the individuals concerned to go about their daily routines more independently. Note that the financial aid is awarded to homeowners or persons with a disability residing in a permanent location.

To receive a subsidy, the eligibility criteria mandate providing documentary proof regarding the limitations experienced, which must be significant and persistent. Also, the individual submitting a request cannot have been awarded financial assistance from another program or a public or private insurance plan.
