Why You Should Hire a Landscape Architect

Last modified: 2020-01-12 | Approximate reading time 2 mins

A landscape architect is a specialist in outdoor space layouts. Thanks to their expertise, not only will you optimize your garden, but you’ll also be able to create a beautiful space that meets all of your expectations.

A landscape architect is a specialist that has studied soils, plants, biology, ecology, ecosystems, and everything related to landscaping. Therefore, they know how to deal with outdoor spaces, from planning to styling. They’ll try to meet all of your expectations if they are feasible and will present the best alternatives if some things cannot be done.

Why you should work with a landscape architect

Another major advantage of working with a landscape architect is that they will allow you to save both time and money. Indeed, although you’ll have to pay them to do the job, thanks to their knowledge your dream garden can become a reality in less time than if you try to do it yourself.

For example, if you want to install a pool or a spa, the architect can help you find the best possible arrangements according to the space you have.

Besides, if an inexperienced person does the job, you’ll probably end up with a botched landscape and will have to pay more to repair the damages. Thus, working with a landscape architect is your best option to guarantee good results.

The meeting process

If you have decided to work with a landscape architect, here is what you should expect:
  1. During your first meeting, they will identify your needs. They will tell you what is possible and what is not, and will present you the best options for your case.
  2. They will then analyse your land/outdoor and note its’ current state. A few measurements and the topographic level of the ground will be calculated.
  3. Once they have garnered all the yard's features, the landscape architect will make a drawing and/ or a plan and will show it to you. Feel free to comment on it and ask them to make adjustments if necessary. After all, it is your project: you definitely have a say in the matter.
  4. Finally, they will show you the final drawing and you’ll be able to start the project.

The final drawing should include all the items (pool, spa, etc.), the plants, the types of materials and the detailed pricing for everything. The meeting may vary a little from one landscape architect to another but they all follow the main steps as listed previously.

In Quebec, l’Association des Architectes Paysagistes du Québec (AAPQ) – which can be translated as “the Association of Landscape Architects of Quebec”- regroups many professional landscape architects. To keep their membership, all members must follow the association's rules and the code of ethics.
