Should You DIY Your Landscaping Project?

Are you looking to benefit from a new, revamped landscape design, but are worried about getting it done right? If so, maybe hiring a professional landscaper is just the right call.

Still, it does entail loosening up those purse strings a bit more to accomplish the desired landscaping project. So, when should you choose the professional route and when should you just DIY the work that needs to be done?

Benefits of Hiring a Professional

1) You have little knowledge of the matter

Since we cannot be expected to master every skill, it is only natural that we are not all blessed with a green thumb. If your knowledge in this area prevents you from wisely selecting plants, perennials, or shrubs tailored to your yard and its particularities, best entrust your project to expert hands. Otherwise, you may be misled and select plants and shrubs based purely on aesthetic preferences, omitting practical considerations such as the degree of maintenance and the appropriate amount of shade each plant or shrub truly needs.

In fact, designing a layout may also be a problem, as it involves properly positioning the different elements and organizing the various levels (elevated, vertical, and ground). Do you want to have a pergola, pond, or pool?

Regardless of the type of landscaping that you choose, you need to balance all of these elements to create a landscape that is both functional and appropriate for the space available. That means creating the right balance between stock-still elements and vegetation, as well as creating the right look (natural or with well-defined shapes). Keep in mind that if the work is not carried out properly or if the plants purchased are not adapted to the region's climate, you will need to start from scratch! So, it does present a huge loss of money and time.

On another note, landscaping even the smallest of yards requires careful planning to make it a comfortable and practical setting despite the limited space. On the matter, keep in mind that a skilled professional will be in the best position to dig up tips and ingenious ways to brilliantly deal with this constraint.

2) Struggling to determine the cost of your project

If there is one thing that is often underestimated when it comes to a landscaping project, it has to be the challenges associated with setting a realistic budget. Budgeting requires you to determine the cost of individual tasks, which will differ significantly depending on the nature of the materials used and the overall complexity of the tasks at hand.

Also, if any electrical wiring is involved, the installation cost can be easily overlooked in your budgeting process. That is a mistake a professional is unlikely to make!

That being said, remember to ask for 3 quotes when choosing your future landscaping project manager. Keep in mind that fees can vary from one company to the next, which is why this stage of the process should never be omitted.

Why not DIY It?

Provided you have the necessary expertise and landscaping skills, doing the work yourself can be beneficial in many ways. First and foremost, you will not need to pay for labour, which is bound to save you a ton of money.

Keep in mind that you can also break your project down into different stages if you lack the financial means to do it all in one go. This is an obvious advantage for those who have a modest budget yet still want to carry out the changes themselves.

Likewise, it goes without saying, it is much easier to have a say regarding the schedule when you are doing the work yourself. Besides, there is a certain amount of personal satisfaction that comes with completing a project, which is worth noting.

Naturally, a project of this nature takes time to complete, which leads us to point out that those who do not have a restrictive schedule may be more inclined to do the work themselves. Needless to say, it is essential to have a good amount of motivation to accomplish such a renovation project, just as it is for any other type of project.

Although we have just outlined the different circumstances in which it is best to hire a professional and in which it is possible to DIY, note that there is another alternative. That is, you can get a sketch from a contractor specializing in landscaping designs. Even though it is not a detailed plan, it does provide some guidelines to ensure that you get off on the right foot.

These are made by landscape architects based on different information, such as photos and location certification.
