What happens if you don’t renovate your kitchen? | Renovation Quotes

For many homeowners, the kitchen is a serious spot of pride, and plenty of attention to detail is paid to maintaining the surfaces, appliances and structures of this space. However, kitchens are one of the rooms that begin to show signs of age and wear earlier than the rest of the home.

If you’re noticing any signs of deterioration or damage, it would be better to renovate your kitchen sooner than later to avoid problems down the line.

We can’t deny that a kitchen renovation might cost some extra dollars, but there are plenty of reasons why you should take on this renovation project. Curious about what will happen if you don’t renovate your kitchen? Read on for the low-down.

Here’s what happens if you don’t renovate your kitchen

Deterioration

Even the smallest signs of deterioration in your kitchen could point to much more serious issues. There are some common indicators that areas of your kitchen are beginning to wear, and you should be aware of these warning signs. They include peeling paint, soft or delaminated materials, rusty nails or nails popping out of the wall, holes made by insects, the smell of must, water stains as well as uncommonly expensive water bills.

If you notice any of these, it could definitely point to your need for a serious upgrade. If your cabinet doors are breaking, you find loose hinges or cracked tiles, then waiting for next year to renovate would not be recommended. Even if these seem like small cosmetic fixes, as we mentioned, they may point to much larger problems.

Drop in water pressure or leaking pipes

A drop in water pressure, leaking and deterioration work hand in hand and both low water pressure and leaking underneath your sink are likely related to a plumbing problem. Low water pressure could also point to mineral deposits in your tap or a problem with water lines in your home, these issues will all eventually lead to problems with your plumbing.

When a faucet leaks, it not only wastes water and adds to your monthly energy bill, but might reflect the fact that you need to take a look at your plumbing. Plumbing is serious business and in some municipalities, redoing or renovating any plumbing must be completed by professionals as it is illegal for you to take this work on as a DIY job.

Your kitchen is old or outdated

For both yourself as well as potential home buyers, the kitchen is one of the most coveted rooms of the home. If your kitchen is looking outdated or feeling particularity old, it is likely time for an upgrade. Although it might not be a pressing issue, if you’re thinking about selling your home in the next 5 years, you’ll definitely want to consider modernizing this room. Cosmetic fixes may seem unnecessary and will have high costs, but there will be a big payoff in the long run. Not only will an up-to-date kitchen look great, but it will greatly affect the resale value of your property if you ever decide to sell.

Chipping or discoloured paint

Of course, chipping or discoloured paint will not necessitate a complete remodel. However, it could be explicitly suggested that your kitchen needs some work done. Chipping paint could be a sign of external factors at play, including a buildup of dirt and harsh chemicals on your kitchen surfaces.

This buildup could lead to some of the aforementioned kitchen issues, and waiting too long to update the colour of the paint on your walls could have serious consequences. When you get down to it,  the paint job itself could end up being a much more arduous process than you had originally thought. For this reason, it is definitely worth considering this project, especially if you haven’t painted in quite some time.

Mildew and mould growth

You may think that a little bit of mildew or mould growth doesn’t hurt anyone, but unfortunately, you’d be wrong. Due to a number of the aforementioned issues including leaking pipes, plumbing problems or noticeable deterioration, you could have some serious mould or mildew problems.

Mould and mildew growth can lead to some severe health problems, and these include respiratory issues as well as skin irritations. Further, mould can easily spread to other areas of your home, and the problem can drastically worsen. If you notice water damage in parts of your kitchen, take the necessary measure to renovate before they spread.

Structural replacement

Obviously, there are going to be some serious consequences if noticeable deterioration and damage in your kitchen are not dealt with in its early stages. Shelling out time and money for considerable structural replacement may be in the cards, including completely replacing countertops, cabinetry, flooring and other major areas of your kitchen.

This is especially true if the damage finds it’s way into your subflooring or deep into the foundation. These are problems that might cost a little bit to fix initially but will be much more expensive the longer you let it slide.

Resale value

It’s worth mentioning that it is highly unlikely you’ll be able to sell a home with a damaged kitchen. As mentioned, a functional, comfortable and modern kitchen is an essential item for most new homebuyers. If you’re noticing your appliances and surfaces beginning to wear, and are considering selling your home in the next five years, it is best to get that renovation out of the way. Not only will a new kitchen be attractive to prospective buyers, but it will definitely affect the resale value of your home.
