By Editorial Team
Updated on January 14, 2025

Doors and windows are essential openings, ensuring a building’s proper functioning. They’re crucial access points, allowing dwellers to come and go and air out indoor areas. If left in a less-than-desirable state, building occupants are swiftly affected. Windows and doors must also be sealed properly to limit noise pollution and maintain the desired temperature in every room.
Are you looking to replace doors and/or windows and don’t know where to start? Well, you're in luck! We’ve combined all the necessary information into a single article.
Below are the areas of focus:

Are you lingering on the first project step, establishing your priorities to make better, more informed decisions thereafter? We selected three keywords to help guide your decision-making process throughout.
House Window and Door Project Keywords
Longevity
It would be a shame to replace your doors and windows only to carry out the same venture five years later. Such a home improvement project is oftentimes extremely costly and complex. Depending on the number of windows you have to replace, you may have to relocate for the duration of the project.
The latter shouldn’t be taken lightly, and you won’t want to subject yourself to it again in the near future. Choose reputable window models and installation methods that have proven to be durable.
Comfort
When shut, windows and doors prevent air and most noises from seeping in, making for comfortable spaces for building occupants. Along the same lines, they must be easy to open to allow for fresh air. Homeowners typically seek window and door models that are airtight and easy to manoeuvre.
Security
Last, but surely not least, security. Windows and doors are entry points for both people to come and go from buildings and to ensure a constant influx of fresh air. However, said openings must protect dwellers from break-ins. Make sure the selected models are security-conscious.
What Questions Should You Ask When Planning a Window and Door Project?
Still along the same vein to further guide you through the different options available, here are factors to consider when planning a window and door project.
What are my aesthetic preferences?
Modern, classic, retro, industrial—there’s a variety of window and door designs available. If you haven’t already done so, gather pictures of particular models you find appealing and focus on said type of product at the time of purchase.
Warning: If you live in a heritage building, condo, or highly regulated area, pay close attention to the questions listed below.
Can I pick the windows and doors of my choosing?
If you live in a home deemed as heritage, note that your selection pool may be limited by regulations to which you’re subjected as a homeowner. To maintain a certain aesthetic coherence and retain your property’s heritage classification, the work undertaken must abide by a certain set of regulations.
Another scenario: You live in a condo tower or a small multi-unit building, and depending on the agreement made and signed by all co-owners, you have to run your selection by the other owners.
When is the best time to schedule this sort of project?
The best time to replace exterior doors and windows is at the end of spring or the beginning of summer. Naturally, if the situation is pressing, there are ways of proceeding at different periods throughout the year. On the other hand, as far as interior doors or windows are concerned, they can be replaced at any time.
How long will the work take (if all goes well)?
For a straightforward installation, one that doesn’t mandate any structural repairs, it takes about an hour per window, and six hours for an exterior door. Interior doors are easier to install, needing roughly two to three hours for every opening. As stated, if any structural reinforcement, frame, or moulding work is needed, it’ll extend the project’s timeline.
To give you a general idea, replacing 10 windows will take 10–15 hours, and replacing six interior doors will take roughly 18 hours.
Window and Door Project Permits in Canada
In some cases, before undertaking your project, you will need to request a renovation permit to replace windows and doors, especially if it calls for exterior models. Check with your municipal authorities as the criteria are likely to change from one area to another. If your house was classified as heritage, chances are, you’ll need a permit. Such proceedings must be done prior to signing a contract with a contractor and purchasing anything.

Comparing Window and Door Models Before Renovating

Source : Hashemi Construction Inc.
The following paragraphs detail the different types of windows and doors retailed, from material to model. That way, you can have a better understanding of your preferences, and have access to the necessary comparative information to carry out your renovation project.
Door and Window Material Selection
The primary door and window manufacturing materials are as follows:
Metals (steel, aluminum)
Wood
Plastic (PVC)
Fibreglass
Hybrids (wood + aluminum; PVC + aluminum)
Bear in mind the following material-specific characteristics:
Steel
Steel front doors are very sturdy and have decent energy efficiency. Steel is a strong material, and therefore much harder to damage, increasing the security aspect of such door types. Moreover, steel is relatively low maintenance.
Aluminum
Aluminum windows and doors are lightweight, durable, and easy to install. Aluminum is also corrosion-resistant and typically low-priced. On the other hand, on cold days, the aluminum door and window parts will be cold to the touch.
Wood
Wood is an especially sought-after material in older homes as it never goes out of style. Also, when properly treated and maintained, it can stay in tip-top shape for many years to come. This material also provides worthwhile flexibility in terms of window and door finishes and colours.
Plastic
PVC doors and windows are very common since they’re affordable and shock-resistant. However, choose a model that's decently insulated from the inside and made with quality materials since low-grade plastic is less durable than other materials.
Hybrids
Hybrid window and door models are an interesting option as they combine the advantages of other models while offsetting their potential downsides. For example, aluminum paired with wood doesn’t get as cold to the touch.
Different Window Models (Factory-Made or Custom)
After brushing up on the different materials available, take a closer look at the different types of windows. There’s quite a range of models available, from shape to opening style, with glazing and security options in between. The table below lists the most common models sold on the market:
Type of Window | Characteristics |
Double-hung window | - Classic |
Single-hung window | - Only the bottom sash opens |
Casement window | - Secured to the frame with hinges |
Awning window | - Awning windows are operated using a lever that opens and shuts the sash by altering the opening axis, allowing the window to remain open even during rainfall. |
Transom window | - Installed on interior walls, allowing visibility into an adjacent room. |
Accent window | - Most often are decorative features |
Fixed/picture window | - Can’t be opened—typically has a minimalist design |
Bay window | - Protruding window that typically features three, side-by-side, glazed sections |
Bow window | - Similar to a bay window, but has more window panes (at least 4) |
The Different Front Door Models and Materials
Front Door Material | Advantages | Downsides |
Steel front door | - Cost-effective | - Wood core, which may warp over time |
Aluminum front door | - Cost-effective | - Lower insulation capacity |
PVC front door | - Reinforced steel core (safe) | - Easily damaged |
Fibreglass front door | - Scratch- and shock-resistant | - Energy-intensive manufacturing process |
Wood front door | - Timeless aesthetic | - May warp, affecting the home’s airtightness |
Types of Interior Doors
Type of Door | Characteristics |
Hinged door | - Most common type |
- Characterized by glass panes
- Track system installed above the doorway (like a barn door) or on the bottom (often seen with closets)
Folding (bi-fold) door | - Similar mechanism to sliding doors, installed above the doorway for maximum stability |
Pocket door | - Sliding door, recessed into wall |
Other Types of Doors
We couldn’t, in good conscience, omit to mention the following types of doors, that are commonly found in most homes.
Patio Door
Patio or sliding glass doors are large doors that separate a deck or balcony from the inside of a home. They’re glazed and, in a lot of cases, feature a fixed pane (window) as well as a sliding one.
Below are some of our blog articles about patio doors to help you choose a door type that best suits your needs:
Garage Door
Most garage doors are operated by a mechanical system powered by electricity. If you store temperature-sensitive items in your garage, make sure it’s well insulated. Lastly, if the garage door is opened on numerous occasions throughout the day, choose a sturdy model.

Door and Window Renovation Steps

Source : Portes et Fenêtres Rive-Sud
In most cases, installing a door or window is a relatively straightforward process if the opening is already made and if it fits just right. However, don’t attempt to carry out this sort of project alone. You will need at least two helpers to hold the door or window and help you hoist it into position and tighten the screws.
Also, note that this sort of project shouldn’t be undertaken by a novice, especially if the door or window in question opens up onto the outside since installation errors can’t be overlooked, resulting in a poorly sealed installation.
The following outlines the steps to installing a door:
Remove the current door
Clean area and carry out necessary repairs
Follow the new door’s installation instructions
With the help of another person, hoist the door onto its hinges
Tighten latches and fasteners

Building Standards for Window and Door Projects
In Canada, the building and renovation industry is regulated by a Building Code, which is enforced by provincial organizations. It concerns all trades, from plumbing to electrical to structures, with windows and doors in between.
The Code establishes the following:
Height of door threshold from the floor or ground up
Height of window sill from the floor or ground up
Window and door material conformity
Installation method conformity
The presence of windows and/or doors in every room
Purpose of windows and doors regarding building ventilation

Once the work is done, as a customer, make sure the outcome is up to standard. Naturally, if you’re reading this article, you’re probably not an industry expert and might need some guidance along the way.
At first glance, the installation might have gone without a hitch, but problems may arise faster than expected.
What Should You Check?
Do a quick walkthrough, testing the equipment before the installer leaves the premises.
For residential windows:
Can you feel air seeping in around the windows?
Can you see condensation building between the two glass panes?
Was the caulking done properly?
Were you given the manufacturer’s warranty information?
Are the window mechanisms easy to operate?
Does the window open easily without sticking or scraping?
For doors:
Does the door open and shut properly?
Was the frame installed correctly?
Does the door squeak?
Is the door level?
Is the door insulated properly (soundproofed, airtight)?
Was the work executed in a satisfactory way (cleanliness of area, meticulous finish)?
Window and Door Contract: What Should You Look for in a Quote?
During the final walkthrough, carefully look over the quote provided and make sure everything detailed in it was done to satisfaction. Check whether the contractor added in writing the type of structure (door or window) to be installed, and detailed every invoiced item, including labour and warranty information.
Are Home Door and Window Projects Covered by a Warranty?
Door and window installations often come with material (parts) and labour warranties, but it ultimately depends on the hired service company. As a customer, make sure to confirm such a matter with the hired contractor. Otherwise, you can fall back on the window and door manufacturer warranty.
Warranties vary from one company to the next, and certain conditions apply to access potential monetary compensation or otherwise. Carefully read over the documents provided by the hired contractor and window and door manufacturer.

How to Manage Your Stress During the Project
Even if you’re only looking to replace one door or a single window, it can be a rather intimidating project if you’ve never worked with an expert before, or if you’ve had a bad experience in the past. Whether you’re planning a large-scale project or a quick and easy one, here are some tricks to help you manage your stress throughout:
Take some time to establish a realistic budget. You must have an idea as to the maximum amount of money you’re willing to spend to avoid going over budget. That way, you can adapt your choices accordingly while ensuring there’s still some wiggle room in case of setbacks.
Plan a flexible timeline. Unless it’s an emergency (faulty door or window), it’s best to take your time, hire the right contractor, and select the best materials.
Find a trusted contractor (see pointers above).
Figure out if you want to relocate for the duration of the project. Sometimes, being on-site while the work is ongoing can be very stressful. Relocating temporarily might be best, only to come back once the project is completed.

FAQ Residential Window and Door Renovations
How to tell if your windows need to be replaced?
Look out for the following telltale signs:
Your windows are damaged (cracked pane, damaged frame, peeling caulk).
You can feel a draft (heat loss).
There’s condensation on the glass or between the glazing.
You struggle to open and shut your windows.
Does my front door need to be replaced?
If you spot one or more of the following telltale signs, consider replacing your door:
You can no longer open or shut your door.
You can feel air leaking through the frame.
The hinges aren’t as sturdy.
Your door is too easy to break open (security matter).
Your door squeaks.
Your door has surface damage.
What is the best type of closet door?
There's no set answer, only one hinged on several factors, such as personal preferences, space available, and the intended use. Sliding and pocket doors are practical if you want an outward-opening door.
Hinged doors are user-friendly for small closets, whereas bi-fold doors are space-efficient for compact spaces. However, there isn’t a “best” option that suits all situations. Assess your options based on your needs. Consult with a door expert if need be!
Is it cheaper to replace a window or a door?
It's hard to tell which project is cheaper: replacing residential doors or windows. As detailed in the tables above, it depends on the selected model and materials, as well as the number of windows or doors installed. High-quality, energy-efficient windows and security-conscious door models are pricier than basic, budget solutions. Moreover, as a homeowner, don't forget to factor in labour fees and the cost of replacing the frame. Doing so will incur additional costs. Refer the to tables above for more information!
