So, where to start? Here’s what you need to know about maintaining your home in 2026.

Annual Home Maintenance: The 10 Priority Projects in 2026

1. Clean Your Ventilation Ducts

Does your home have a ventilation system with air ducts? At least once a year, you should inspect and clean them.

For a proper cleaning, it’s best to contact professionals in duct maintenance. They have the tools to perform the task efficiently.

2. Clean the Refrigerator Coils

Since we open the refrigerator door several times a day, we often think about cleaning its interior. However, we often neglect the exterior parts. A lot of dust tends to accumulate around the coils. If too much dust builds up, the compressor’s efficiency will be affected.

3. Repair Your Floors

Your floors take a lot of wear, especially in high-traffic areas such as the entrance, kitchen, hallways, and living room. Once a year, you should do minor maintenance work to keep them in good condition.

The maintenance process varies depending on the floor material. For example:

  • For ceramic flooring: repair grout, replace a damaged tile.

  • For wood flooring: oil, sand, re-varnish.

  • For linoleum flooring: replace a tile, use a deep-cleaning product (suitable for linoleum).

Make sure to consult the specific instructions for your flooring by checking with the manufacturer. When in doubt, contact a flooring specialist.

4. Inspect Your Water Heater

Most water heaters last about 10 to 20 years. After that, they need to be replaced. To extend their life as much as possible, it’s important to inspect them at least once a year. By doing so, you can quickly see if any parts need repair or replacement, or if you need to perform a drain or any other maintenance process.

5. Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

What is more important than having a working smoke detector to ensure your safety? Once or twice a year, check that your alarm systems are still able to detect smoke or carbon monoxide.

6. Check the Caulking Around Your Doors and Windows

Repeatedly opening and closing doors and windows can wear down the caulking that ensures their airtightness. Walk around your home to see if you notice any air leaks around doors and windows.

If necessary, re-caulk either using a caulking kit or by calling in experts.

7. Inspect Your Basement to Prevent Flooding

Water infiltration and flooding in homes often occur through the basement. This can be caused by cracks in the foundation or problems with window sealing. Check the walls, floors, and around doors and windows to see if water could get in.

If you notice any issues, take action immediately to prevent a flood that could cause serious damage.

8. Lubricate Your Door Hinges

Doors are opened and closed so often that the hinges take a lot of strain. Once a year, a little lubricant makes all the difference. This helps prevent squeaking and prolongs the life of the hinge parts.

9. Inspect Your Chimney

If your home has a chimney, it should be inspected about once a year to ensure it remains in good condition. This task should be performed by experts, as the correct technique and tools are required.

10. Test the Condition of Your Electrical System

Nowadays, we rely heavily on electricity, especially if we use smart home systems to operate locks and alarm systems. Therefore, it is important to periodically ensure that your electrical system is in good working order. First, look for the following signs:

  • Increasingly frequent power outages

  • Frequent short circuits

  • Lack of electrical outlets

  • Sudden spikes in electricity bills

  • Outlets and appliances that suddenly feel hotter

Notice one or more of these signs? Contact an electrician promptly to address the situation.
