Types of Tax Credits and Grants Available for Eco-Friendly Renovations

Are you about to renovate your home and considering eco-friendly options? Here is a guide to the various grants available for green renovations in Quebec.

Eco-friendly renovation work can help reduce your monthly energy bills while also minimizing your environmental impact. However, these types of renovations are often perceived as more expensive. It is important to understand that this is not necessarily the case, as the final cost depends largely on the materials selected for the project.

For most renovation projects, it is difficult to calculate the exact cost difference between a conventional home and an eco-friendly home because of the wide variety of available materials. One area where a clear difference can be seen is financial assistance. The Government of Quebec and many municipalities offer several grants specifically for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly renovation projects.

Eco-Friendly Renovations: Available Grants

The Rénoclimat grant program provides direct financial assistance for renovations involving the building envelope, including insulation and air sealing, as well as certain ventilation systems that meet energy-efficiency requirements. Following an assessment by a certified advisor, homeowners may qualify for valuable grants that can help reduce their carbon footprint.

This grant is available to both owner-occupants and owners of rental properties, including duplexes, triplexes, and small residential buildings. After completing the renovations recommended in the ÉnerGuide report, property owners see an average reduction of approximately 20% in their heating costs.

Please note that grant applications for equipment such as geothermal systems and central heat pumps are now mainly handled through Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program.

Funded by the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ), the RénoRégion program helps low- and modest-income owner-occupants complete major repairs to their primary residence. To qualify, the property’s value must not exceed the established maximum, which is generally set at $150,000 based on the municipal assessment.

The eligible work must have a minimum value of $2,000 and must correct major defects affecting at least one of the following nine areas:

• Exterior walls ;                   

• Roofing ;

• Openings, including doors and windows ;

• Projections, including balconies and porches ;

• Structure ;

• Heating ;

• Plumbing ;

• Thermal insulation ;

• Electrical systems.

The financial assistance is paid after the work has been completed and may cover up to 95% of eligible repair costs. Depending on household income, the maximum amount may range from $20,000 to $25,000.

This program is intended for residents of municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants, the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region, or areas that are not served by a municipal water supply system.

Éconologis

Éconologis is a free government program offered each year during the colder months, from October 1 to March 31. It is intended for low-income households, whether tenants or homeowners, that want to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of their home.

The process begins with an in-home visit from a certified advisor, who provides personalized recommendations and carries out minor air-sealing improvements on site, such as caulking windows, installing weatherstripping, and insulating electrical outlets. Under certain conditions, the program also includes the free installation of electronic thermostats.

A major recent change is that an Éconologis visit is now the mandatory first step for determining eligibility for Hydro-Québec’s social assistance component, which provides eligible households with a wall-mounted heat pump and its installation completely free of charge.

To participate, the household’s total income must not exceed the eligibility thresholds established by the government. For example, the limit is $59,076 for a single person and $83,541 for a two-person household.

Chauffez vert

For many years, the Quebec government’s Chauffez vert program helped owners of single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, and small residential buildings of up to three storeys finance the replacement of an oil- or propane-fired heating system with an electric or renewable-energy system.

Important Update: The Chauffez vert program officially ended on March 31, 2026. No new applications can now be submitted.

What Options Are Available in 2026?

• To install an energy-efficient heat pump, homeowners can apply through Hydro-Québec’s centralized LogisVert program. Financial assistance may reach up to $6,700, or up to $22,000 when combined with a thermal storage system.

• To replace an oil heating system, the federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program offers total financial assistance of up to $10,000 for low- and median-income households.

Tax Credits That Are No Longer Available

The ÉcoRénov tax credit, which offered a 20% reimbursement of eligible green renovation expenses up to a maximum of $10,000, has not been available since the end of 2014. The LogiRénov program also provided a 20% tax credit, but the maximum reimbursement was limited to $3,000. This program expired at the end of 2015.

The RénoVert tax credit, which applied to contracts signed between March 17, 2016, and March 31, 2019, has also ended. Compared with LogiRénov, RénoVert offered significantly higher financial assistance, although it was more specifically focused on environmentally friendly renovations and included a larger number of eligibility requirements.

To qualify, the renovations had to improve the home’s energy efficiency. By contrast, LogiRénov applied more broadly to renovation expenses, regardless of whether the work was environmentally focused. The RénoVert credit covered up to 20% of eligible expenses exceeding $2,500, with a maximum tax credit of $10,000.

Municipal Grants for Energy-Efficient Renovations

At the municipal level, each city offers its own renovation grants and financial assistance programs. In Montreal, for example, homeowners in certain designated neighbourhoods may qualify for funding for major renovation projects or targeted minor improvements.

Quebec City offers grants for the maintenance and restoration of homes in Old Quebec. Laval, meanwhile, provides assistance for projects in the De la Concorde metro area, as well as for smaller eco-friendly initiatives such as installing a home composter.

Before Starting the Renovation Work

Despite the available grants, eco-friendly renovations may still seem too expensive. In that case, there are several steps you can take to delay the need for major renovation work.

For example, before replacing your home’s doors and windows, consider more affordable ways to reduce energy consumption. Improving the building’s air sealing by adding caulking can help prevent drafts and reduce energy loss.
