A concrete countertop can help transform the space it's in. Many see concrete as an industrial material. However, if used well, it can adapt to any decor style. A mundane kitchen can undergo a major transformation with the addition of a new concrete countertop covering.
These possess the "design" touch and functional aspect that all kitchens should have. Depending on the vision you have for your kitchen, you'll have access to several options that will affect the appearance and durability of the material.
How to Make a Concrete Countertop? 3 Manufacturing Options

Before customizing your countertop, you'll need to choose its shape. There are three types of concrete countertops.
The first option is a prefabricated and customized concrete slab. Manufacturers work based on the dimensions of the cabinets that will accommodate the countertop. A mold is then made taking these measurements into account. The slab is manufactured on-site at the company's facility, then transported and installed in the kitchen.
Another type of concrete countertop is one created on-site. Concrete is poured directly onto the countertop, on a concrete slab or plywood surface, which acts as a barrier between the countertop and the cabinets. Molds are also built to create the edges.
Finally, the last option is the simplest among the three mentioned. It involves prefabricated slabs that are cut to the dimensions of the countertop.
Which Cement to Use to Make a Kitchen Countertop?
To make a concrete kitchen countertop, it is crucial to choose the right type of cement to ensure not only pleasing aesthetics but also strength and durability suitable for the heavy use of a kitchen. Here are the main types of cement you can consider for this project:
Portland cement is the most commonly used type of cement in concrete mixes for various construction projects, including kitchen countertops. Known for its strength and ease of use, it offers excellent mechanical resistance. Additionally, it is compatible with a variety of additives that can improve both the strength and workability of the concrete.
White cement, on the other hand, is a variant of Portland cement distinguished by its neutral color, making it popular for kitchen countertops where aesthetics are a priority. One of its main advantages is its ability to allow for more precise and uniform coloring of the concrete.
Finally, rapid-setting cement is designed to harden faster than ordinary types of cement. This type of cement is particularly useful for countertop fabrication when quick demolding is necessary. Using this cement can significantly reduce waiting times before proceeding with finishes, thus speeding up the overall installation process.

People hear the word "concrete" and tend to think of sidewalks, but it's important to know that concrete countertops made today have more in common with natural stone than with flooring surfaces. By using acid staining techniques, concrete can achieve the same speckled and textured finish as granite or slate.
This imparts a very "chic" style that can be enhanced with a filler product whose color matches that of the material, all of which helps reduce the appearance of cracks. Concrete countertops can also be molded into any shape, making them easy to customize for any type of kitchen.
These countertops can also be highly personalized, to the extent of being able to integrate them into any design. If you like ceramic or glass tiles, you can integrate them around the countertop's edge. Concrete can also be dyed in a wide range of colors to match the hues of the floor or cabinets.
By the way, the technique used to create the marbled effect can also produce beautiful earthy tones if the stain is allowed to penetrate the surface for some time.
Concrete countertops tend to beautify over time. Thanks to the nature of concrete, its visual appearance will continue to evolve over time, developing a warm patina. If you appreciate rustic/industrial style, this is an ideal material.
How to Change the Color of a Concrete Countertop?
Changing the color of a concrete kitchen countertop can drastically transform the appearance of your kitchen, and this can be done in several ways, depending on the desired result and the current condition of the countertop. Here are several effective methods for changing the color of a concrete countertop.
Staining with an acid product: This is a popular method that chemically reacts with the concrete to create a rich and translucent color
Applying epoxy paint: Another option for changing the color of a countertop, which provides a durable and resistant surface.
Applying water-based stain: A less toxic method than acid stains and available in a wide range of colors.
Using pigments during pouring: Integrating pigments into the concrete mix is an excellent way to color your concrete uniformly.
The Strength and Durability of Concrete for a Countertop

The strength of these countertops relies on a few factors, the first being its thickness, which reduces the chances of scratching the surface unless a very heavy object is dropped on it.
Heat resistance is also a selling point for concrete. Pots and hot dishes can be left on the surface without causing any issues.
However, concrete is very porous and can be stained, especially when it comes into contact with common kitchen foods such as wine, juice, coffee, or oil. That's why applying a water-based sealer to the surface is crucial.
What Type of Sealer to Apply on a Concrete Countertop?
There are products that penetrate the pores of the concrete to seal them, and other products that create a layer on the surface of the concrete, thus forming a physical barrier between the countertop and harmful substances. The two most effective sealing products are:
Epoxy forms a protective layer on the surface and leaves a shiny finish that may not be suitable for all homeowners. However, it is important to note that epoxy-based sealants can be damaged by heat and discoloration may occur.
Polyurethane, on the other hand, can resist daily wear and tear as it also protects against scratches. These products are very chemical-based, but they offer a good level of resistance against abrasion. However, they require a lot of processing time for the countertop to be ready for use.
Surface Cracks: What Are the Causes?
Despite concrete countertops being recognized for their durability, it sometimes happens that minor cracks appear on the surface. Although they may not always be aesthetically pleasing, they are not located at the level of the concrete structure and do not affect the integrity of the countertop.
When cracks appear, they are generally caused by concrete shrinkage. This shrinkage can result from two main causes: either the concrete drying or going through a hot-cold cycle that causes the material to contract. Cracks mostly appear as the dry concrete continuously absorbs moisture before drying again. Over time, this cycle of moisture and drying can lead to cracks. These cracks typically appear near the openings of the countertop, where areas retain a lot of moisture (e.g., around the sink perimeter).
Some companies use reinforcement techniques, incorporating fibers into the concrete, to design prefabricated slabs that are less prone to developing cracks. Even though concrete countertops can be reinforced, minor cracks may still appear over time.
Remember that these cracks are too narrow for food and dirt to accumulate and do not affect the structural integrity of the countertop. It's also worth noting that many people find that the "aged" style adds character that arises from this natural phenomenon. Minor cracks and normal wear can contribute to the material's natural patina.
That being said, if the cracks become too wide, it's still advisable to try to fill them.

Maintenance Tips for Concrete Coatings
Maintaining concrete countertops is one of the most important aspects to prolong their lifespan. In the long term, urethane helps create a non-porous surface that repels stains. For best results, sealants should be applied periodically, ideally every 1 to 3 years.
To ensure regular maintenance on top of the sealer surface, you can apply wax. This additional layer will help block liquids, which will bead up on the surface. When you notice that liquids no longer bead up when they fall on the countertop, that's a sign that a new layer of wax needs to be applied.
In case of staining, it is possible to sand your countertop and reseal it. The shinier the finish, the greater the resistance of the sealer. To clean concrete countertops, use any non-abrasive commercial products, although a sponge wipe is usually sufficient.
To prevent both knife wear and countertop marking, use a cutting board when cutting food. Wooden pieces can be embedded in the concrete to create a drainer or cutting board.
