How Much Do Plumbing Renovations Cost?

Last modified: 2018/10/05 | Approximate reading time 3 mins

Are you planning a plumbing renovation project? We have prepared a price guide so that you can get a general idea of how much money you will have to shell out to get things done:

Plumbing elements

Different types of plumbing renovations and their prices

Replacing house pipes

Depending on the extent of the work, this may entail major renovations. On average, you will have to spend $150 to $200 per linear foot for this type of work, if you hire a professional (which is highly recommended).

Installing a water heater

The lifespan of a water heater varies depending on its quality level. Under the best conditions, it can last up to fifteen years. However, several factors may cause accelerated ageing, namely the number of minerals present in the water. Installing a water heater is much more complicated that one would think. Several norms relating to electricity and plumbing must be respected. An installation that is done by a professional will help increase the product’s lifespan and will reduce the risk of complications.

Here are a few factors that can help you identify whether the water heater needs to be changed or not: your water is not as warm as it used to be or the warm water runs out more quickly than before; the presence of rust means that there are cracks; the water isn’t as clear as it used to be. For an installation that is done by a professional, you will have to plan out a budget that varies between $400 and $600 and more, before taxes.

Toilet in a bathroom

Replacing a toilet

Several reasons may lead you to have to replace your toilet. It might be due to the fact that the toilet is old, that it doesn’t work properly anymore, that the toilet bowl isn’t available on the market anymore, or simply that the toilet is broken. To replace a toilet with a new one, when you hire a professional to do the work, you will have to spend at least $300.

Replacing a sink

Replacing your sink is a proper solution if the one you currently have is broken, old or doesn’t work well. In order to replace a sink, one needs to have knowledge and experience in terms of plumbing and safety. The help of a professional will set you back approximately $200 to $300.

Replacing a bathtub

Installing a bathtub is not a task that can be completed by just anyone. When a tub starts cracking, it should be replaced ASAP in order to avoid water infiltrations which could create mould in your bathroom. The help of a plumber will be necessary as they will inspect your infrastructure to determine whether you currently have the appropriate plumbing system for your new bathtub.

Depending on the size of your new bathtub, the contractor might have to remove the mouldings, the floor covering material and parts of the floor. They will also test out to see if the floor is able to sustain the weight of the new bathtub. To replace your bathtub, plan to spend around $1500 (before taxes) for the labour.

Renovating  the whole bathroom's plumbing

If your bathroom needs to be completely renovated (plumbing, bathtub, toilet, shower, etc.), prices can vary from one extreme to another. However, in order for the renovation project to benefit from optimal conditions, -meaning that the work is being done by a professional- on average, you will end up paying at least $5000. This amount can increase greatly depending on the nature of the work being done.

Installing a kitchen sink

Changing your kitchen sink implies the installation or modification of the pipes connections for the used water drainpipes. This type of work can be quite complicated. Hiring a professional to complete this task will reduce the risk of potential errors and future problems. If you want to install a new kitchen sink with the help of a professional, count between $300 and $400 to do so.
