Overhead Garage Storage: All There's to Know

By Cynthia Pigeon

Updated on November 7, 2023

Even though your garage’s primary function is to shield your vehicle(s) from adverse weather conditions, it can also be used for storage. However, before long, you'll need to optimize your space as more items will start to pile up. As such, there are many things to consider regarding overhead storage in your garage. Overhead garage storage is one of the absolute best ways to keep your space clutter-free, while also maximizing its use. And, you'll soon notice just how much of a difference this alternative makes!

Overhead Garage Storage: Features & Models

There are a few things to consider when building or renovating your garage and opting for overhead storage is definitely one of them. First off, you obviously need to figure out what you're going to store in the overhead space; it’ll help when choosing the best type of storage system based on your needs. And, since there are many different types of overhead storage systems available on the market, you ought to be able to find one that best suits your needs.

An overhead garage storage system can be a great way to organize and store items while keeping them out of sight. This can be especially useful if the garage is used as a workspace, as it can then also be converted into a storage area for tools, supplies, and other belongings. An overhead storage system can allow you to free up floor space, which can be more effectively used to park a car or for other purposes.

Amongst the most sought-after overhead garage storage systems, one finds:

  • Suspended racks, which are an excellent storage alternative for large objects, such as bicycles, ladders, and gardening tools;

  • Shelves, which are perfect for storing smaller objects, such as boxes of holiday decorations or seasonal clothing;

  • Storage bins, which are ideal for stockpiling anything from sports gear to Christmas decorations.

When choosing an overhead garage storage system, you should also factor in its load capacity. This is particularly important if you plan to store heavy items in the overhead space. Make sure you choose a system that has a suitable load capacity for the things you plan on stowing. Lastly, you need to set a budget. Luckily, there are many different storage systems to choose from, available at a wide range of prices.

Various Formats of Overhead Garage Storage

There is more than one way to store items in your garage. The main available storage options are as follows:

Overhead storage

This storage system can sustain different weights depending on the model. The system is mounted on rails and secured to ceiling joists. To access it, you'll need a stepladder. This storage system is very practical: it’s solid, safe, and discreet, and it can store up to 1,000 pounds per 4' x 8'. The suspension capacity extends to 48 inches, and many styles are available depending on your preferences.

Wall-mounted storage

You can install wall-mounted racks. This type of storage has a maximum capacity of approximately 1,000 pounds and is available in a variety of sizes from 2 to 4 feet deep, with a hanging capacity of 48 inches. Wall-mounted storage racks are made of steel and available in various finishes. They're rail-mounted and secured to ceiling joists.

Platforms

Platforms allow for maximum storage weight and volume. This means you can store the bulkiest items in your garage in a secure and elevated location. Platforms also offer better storage distribution over a larger area. They can be powered for additional convenience. Furthermore, platforms can be bolted to the walls to make an actual wall-mounted shelf.

Motorized overhead storage

Using a motorized ceiling storage unit is the ideal solution. Gone are the stepladder days! You can safely lower your storage platform with the push of a button. This enables you to maximize your space in the most convenient way possible.

Price of Overhead Garage Storage

The price of overhead garage storage is really dependent on a few factors, such as the size of the garage, the type of storage system, and the time and effort required for installation.

Listed below are the elements to consider prior to selecting a storage system:

  • Overhead type: As ceiling types differ, you should adapt your overhead storage system accordingly.

  • Ceiling height: This is super important, as you’ll need to ensure that objects being stockpiled can fit without a struggle in the selected space.

  • Weight of items for storage: It’s important to take this factor into consideration, as some ceilings aren’t designed to withstand heavy loads.

  • Amount of items to store: This will allow you to determine the amount of storage space required.

  • Garage configuration: You’ll need to ensure that the storage system of your choosing is adapted to the space available.

The type of storage system you select also affects the price. Shelving is generally less expensive than platforms because they're more space efficient. On the other hand, a motorized storage system, albeit convenient, is much more expensive than a conventional one.

Some stores carry (for example) heavy-duty steel storage units that range from $90 to $170. For a more customized type of storage (or for the much-discussed motorized garage lift), it's probably best to hire a contractor who'll provide you with a quote based on your needs.

Should you be concerned about safekeeping your equipment while the platform moves up and down, rest assured, safety straps and nets are fitted on either side to keep your items secure during use (and once in place too).

Take advantage of your garage's available overhead space with a variety of efficient and aesthetically pleasing storage systems. These systems are available in a wide range of sizes and prices, and you're sure to find exactly the sort of storage solution that best suits your needs.
